ExCPT vs PTCE: which pharmacy technician exam should you take?
There are two national certification exams for pharmacy technicians: the ExCPT from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and the PTCE from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Both lead to a certified pharmacy technician credential, and both cover the core work of a technician. Here is how they compare, and how to decide which one is right for you.

- Content by number of scored items: dispensing process (43, including 7 on calculations), role and duties of the technician (15), laws and controlled substances (15), medication and patient safety and quality assurance (14) and drugs and drug therapy (13).
The PTCE at a glance
- 90 multiple-choice questions, 80 scored and 10 unscored, with 1 hour and 50 minutes to finish.
- Eligibility includes completing a PTCB recognized education or training program, or at least 500 hours of equivalent work experience, along with PTCB's disclosure and conduct requirements.
How to choose
The most important step is to check your state board of pharmacy, because states set their own rules for technician registration and certification. After that, look at what your training program prepares you for, since many programs are built around one exam, and at what local pharmacies and hospitals ask for in job postings.
If both exams are accepted where you live, think about the format that suits you. The ExCPT gives you more questions and a little more time, with a heavy focus on the dispensing process, while the PTCE is shorter overall. Either way, solid calculation skills and a good grasp of federal pharmacy law will serve you well.

Common questions
Is the ExCPT easier than the PTCE?
Neither exam is officially easier. The ExCPT has 100 scored questions in 2 hours and 10 minutes, and the PTCE has 80 scored questions in 1 hour and 50 minutes. Your preparation and your state's rules matter more than the label.
Does my state accept the ExCPT?
State rules vary, so check your state board of pharmacy for current requirements before you register.
How much math is on the ExCPT?
NHA's test plan lists 7 scored items on calculations within the dispensing process domain, and calculations also appear in other dispensing tasks such as daily dosage.
Do your practice questions cover state pharmacy law?
Our law questions follow federal law, which is what the national exam focuses on. Check your state board for any rules that go further.
